iCarsoft MB V4.0 Review: Can a Mercedes Owner Skip the Dealer Scan?

The verdict

The MB V4.0 gives a Mercedes, Sprinter or Smart owner full-system scans, bi-directional tests, CAN-FD support and 41 service functions (AdBlue, turbo, clutch and battery resets among them) for $229.99. It is not a programming tool, older cars need extra adapters, and one owner reported thin Airmatic and ABS test support. Buy it for your own maintenance.

Best forMercedes, Sprinter and Smart owners doing their own service

A dealer charges for the first look at a Mercedes warning light before anyone has touched the car. Owners of C-Classes, Sprinters and Smarts know the routine, and so does the person who just wants the service indicator cleared after an oil change. The MB V4.0 costs $229.99 and tries to make both visits unnecessary.

Our read is built from iCarsoft's product page and manual, a reseller search and the buyer comments posted under the listing. We found no independent bench test of this exact model, so the function claims below are the maker's. We flag where that matters.

One tool, three Mercedes families and room for two more

Out of the box the MB V4.0 carries software for Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter, Smart and Maybach. The page gives coverage as 1996 to 2025. A reseller's search summary quoted the manual as saying 1996 to 2023, so confirm your model year against iCarsoft's function list before ordering.

FIG. 1Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter, Smart and Maybach come pre-installed; two more make groups can be downloaded free from a list of 24.

The two free slots are a quiet bargain for a mixed household. Pick BMW or Toyota for the second car, and the same tablet does both. That is something a single-brand scanner at this price does not offer.

Fixing the thing, not just reading it

The page promises full-system access: engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, and body and comfort modules, with bi-directional control for each. The listed commands include the ABS pump, window regulators, fuel pump, throttle, EGR valve and individual injectors, and iCarsoft puts the count at "22+ active tests".

A buyer comment under the listing shows the limit of that claim. One owner wrote that ABS testing had given no luck so far and that information on Airmatic (the air suspension system) was thin. That is one comment, not a trend, but it is a reminder that "supported" and "easy" are different words.

The reset list is the reason to buy

The total is 41 service functions: 9 everyday and 32 advanced. For a Mercedes owner the useful ones read like a to-do list:

  • Oil reset and service interval reset
  • Electric parking brake pad retraction
  • Steering angle calibration
  • Battery registration and sleep mode
  • Air suspension calibration and height adjustment
  • AdBlue counter reset on diesels
  • Turbocharger learning and clutch contact point learning
  • Seatbelt pretensioner reset after an airbag event
  • Window glass top-position learning

Plenty of brand-agnostic scanners will do an oil reset. Few list AdBlue, NOx sensor learning, turbo learning and clutch adaptation in the same menu, and those are where Mercedes diesels send people back to the dealer.

Old cars and new cars, both handled with caveats

Modern platforms (the page cites W213, W223 and W167) need the CAN-FD protocol, and the MB V4.0 supports it. Cars before 2003 use a round 38-pin port instead of the usual OBD connector, such as the W202 up to 2000, the W210 up to 2002 and the R129 up to 2002. Those need an optional 38-pin adapter, and older Sprinters need an optional 14-pin one. Both cost extra.

The tablet itself

This is a 5-inch Android touchscreen with a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 64 GB of storage and a 5,000 mAh battery rated for about 6 hours. Connection to the car is by cable, with Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz used for updates, which are free for life. There is a one-year warranty.

Against the older MB models

The page compares the line from V1.0 to V4.0. The jump to this version brings the touchscreen, Wi-Fi updates, bi-directional control, the two extra make slots and the 32 advanced service functions.

If you drive anything from 2020 onward you need the CAN-FD support in this generation. For an older car, an earlier model may do the job for less.

What buyers say

The listing on iCarsoft's own store shows 63 ratings: 51 five-star (81%), 11 four-star and one three-star, with none below that. A store showing its own reviews is not a neutral sample, so we weigh it lightly. Still, the pattern fits the product: people who do oil resets and basic module scans are happy, and the complaints come from those who tried deeper tests.

Our verdict

The MB V4.0 can replace most of the dealer visits a Mercedes, Sprinter or Smart owner makes for resets and module checks: the service list is broad and the price is $229.99. It is not a programming tool, it does not claim to be, and it leaves some deep systems (Airmatic, ABS tests) with user reports of difficulty. Buy it if you do your own maintenance. Spend more if you want module flashing or a shop-grade support line.

What worked, what did not
